Browser extension for Chrome
The Volume Master Chrome extension, listed as Volume Master – Sound Boost, lets you adjust browser-tab volume from 0–600% and choose from eight listening presets. Use the 10-band equalizer, compressor and peak limiter to adjust the sound, then compare your settings with the original audio.
Audio processing runs on your device, and no account is required. The extension controls browser-tab audio, rather than every application on your PC. Below, you can install it, learn the controls and check its features and limitations.
For Chrome on desktop. Opens the official Chrome Web Store listing; no Windows installer or .exe is needed. A mobile version is not currently offered.

Quick start
The Volume Master browser extension adds audio controls to Chrome. It adjusts sound in a selected tab, while your computer’s system volume controls the overall output. A browser extension is also called an add-on; it runs inside your browser rather than as a separate desktop application.
Volume boosting raises the audio level. Audio enhancement changes how it sounds, using tools such as an equalizer, listening presets and peak controls. The popup gives you quick access to everyday controls, while the full audio studio provides more detailed adjustments.
These tools can help with quiet lectures, soft dialogue, podcasts and recordings with uneven volume. Results depend on the source recording, website and speakers or headphones. A 600% slider setting does not mean six times the perceived loudness, and increasing the boost can introduce distortion. The maximum setting in this extension is 600%; a 1000% boost is not included.
Here is a quick overview of the controls and listening tools.
0–600% boost, per-tab control, mute, reset and stop
Natural, Lecture, Night, Music, Bass, Podcast, Movie and Comfort
10-band EQ, gain, preamp, left/right balance, mono and one-sided audio rescue
Compressor, peak limiter, automatic level adjustment (AGC) and noise gate
Original vs Enhanced audio
Optional site settings, saved profiles and settings import/export
Playback speed, pitch, A/B loop and audio delay
Sleep timer, keyboard shortcuts and audio-tab switcher
Audio status indicators and the “Why no difference?” helper
Dark mode, responsive layout and full audio studio
Playback speed and A/B loop work with supported website players and files opened in the studio. They are unavailable in Browser tab capture mode.
Install Volume Master on your PC through the Chrome Web Store. It runs inside the browser and does not require a separate Windows app or .exe installer. On Windows 10 or Windows 11, check that your installed Chrome version meets the extension’s requirements.
Play a video or audio recording, then open Volume Master to start adjusting the sound. Begin with a small volume change or choose a listening preset, and compare the result with the original audio.
Keep the recording playing while you adjust the controls so you can hear the effect of each change.
100% is the normal volume setting, with no extra boost from the volume slider. Other enabled effects may still change the sound. Move the slider gradually to raise or lower the level, and reduce it if you hear crackling or harsh audio.
Use Mute to silence the processed audio. Reset returns the relevant controls to their defaults, while Stop ends audio processing and returns playback to the original sound.
You can close the popup after choosing your settings. Closing the popup does not stop active audio processing, so you can continue watching or listening without leaving the controls open. Click the toolbar icon again whenever you want to adjust the sound.
Press Stop to return to normal playback. You do not need to uninstall or disable the extension each time you finish listening.
After refreshing a page, navigating to another video or opening a new tab, check the audio status before assuming your previous session is still active. Start listening again if needed, and check whether optional site memory has restored your settings.
The eight presets give you starting points for different listening needs. Try a mode with your recording, then compare it with the original sound before making further adjustments.
| Mode | When to Try It | When to Try Another |
|---|---|---|
| Natural | General listening or a starting point before adjustments | Try a content-specific mode if the recording needs more help |
| Lecture | Quiet lessons, tutorials and spoken explanations | Compare with Podcast or Natural if speech sounds less natural |
| Night | Watching or listening at a lower overall volume | Try Natural if you prefer the recording’s original changes in loudness |
| Music | Songs, instrumental tracks and browser music players | Compare with Natural if the tonal change does not suit the track |
| Bass | Recordings where you want more low-frequency emphasis | Switch modes if the sound becomes boomy or speech gets harder to hear |
| Podcast | Interviews, conversations and other spoken-word recordings | Compare with Lecture for quiet educational content |
| Movie | Films, shows and dialogue-heavy videos | Try Lecture or Podcast if spoken words are your main concern |
| Comfort | An alternative listening preset to compare with your current settings | Return to Natural if you prefer less adjustment |
A preset is a starting point, not a guaranteed improvement. The same mode can sound different across recordings, speakers and headphones.
Use these controls when a preset does not give you the sound you want. Change one setting at a time, then replay the same passage to judge whether it helps.
The 10-band equalizer divides sound into frequency ranges that you can raise or lower. Low frequencies affect bass and rumble, midrange frequencies contain much of the voice and instrument detail, and high frequencies affect brightness and hiss.
Make small adjustments. If the sound feels boomy, try lowering the bass slightly. If it sounds harsh, reduce the brighter frequencies rather than adding more volume. Speech clarity depends on the recording, so increasing every midrange band may not help.
Return the bands to 0 dB, or the flat position, to remove your EQ adjustments. Other enabled effects can still change the sound.

Gain and preamp controls adjust the audio level. A preamp generally changes the level before later processing, but the exact position of each control depends on the extension’s audio connection and processing path.
Volume boost, preamp and EQ increases can add together. Raising several controls at once can leave less room for loud peaks and introduce distortion. If you hear crackling or strained sound, lower the boost, preamp or raised EQ bands, then compare again.
Mono combines the left and right channels, which can help when spoken audio is recorded on only one side. Left/right balance changes how strongly you hear each side of a stereo recording.
Try one-sided audio rescue when a recording’s speech is missing from one channel. Compare the result with the original before keeping the setting, especially with music where stereo separation may be intentional.
Check another recording first. If every recording plays through only one side, inspect your headphones, connection and device balance settings. An audio effect cannot repair a faulty speaker or cable.

These tools control changes in audio level. Start with modest settings: stronger processing can make background noise more noticeable or cause the sound to rise and fall unnaturally.
| Control | What It Does | What to Watch For |
|---|---|---|
| Compressor | Reduces louder passages relative to quieter ones | Heavy compression can flatten the sound or cause audible pumping |
| Peak limiter | Restrains digital peaks in the processed audio | It cannot repair distortion already present in the recording |
| Auto-level / AGC | Adjusts gain as the detected audio level changes | Quiet background noise may become louder during pauses |
| Noise gate | Reduces signals below a chosen threshold | An aggressive threshold can cut off quiet words or word endings |
Maximum settings are not always better. If speech sounds chopped, reduce the noise gate. If loudness keeps swelling and dropping, ease the automatic level adjustment or compression.
The noise gate is not AI noise removal. It works by signal level rather than identifying and separating a speaker from background noise.
Use Original vs Enhanced to check whether your adjustments actually help. Focus on how easily you can follow the recording. A louder result is not always a clearer one.
Where possible, compare at a similar listening level. A large volume difference can make it harder to judge whether the processing improves clarity.
The Original option lets you compare against unenhanced sound while evaluating your settings. Stop ends the processing session and returns to normal playback.
If you hear little or no difference, open the “Why no difference?” helper. Check whether processing is active, the intended tab is selected and audio is playing before increasing the boost.
If changing a setting produces no audible result, check the audio status before increasing the boost. The “Why no difference?” helper can help you identify whether processing is active, playback has stopped or the audio connection needs attention.
| Status | What It Means | What to Check Next |
|---|---|---|
| ACTIVE | Audio processing is running | Compare Original and Enhanced to judge the effect |
| NO AUDIO | No audio signal is currently detected | Play the recording and check that you selected the intended tab |
| MUTED | A mute condition is detected | Check the extension, player and browser-tab mute controls |
| PAUSED | Media playback is paused | Resume playback before adjusting the sound |
| CAPTURE BLOCKED | The audio connection could not be established or is restricted | Check the capture prompt and whether the website allows processing |
| FULLSCREEN FALLBACK | A fallback processing route is being used for fullscreen playback | Check that audio remains active and which controls are available |
| LIMITING | Peak control is restraining the processed signal | Reduce excessive boost if the sound feels flattened or strained |
| POSSIBLE CLIPPING | The signal may be exceeding the available audio range | Lower gain, preamp or raised EQ bands, then compare again |
ACTIVE does not guarantee an audible improvement. A subtle setting may produce only a small change, while a paused or silent recording gives you nothing to compare.
These indicators describe the audio processing state. They do not diagnose the condition of your speakers or headphones.
Use website memory for a site you visit regularly and saved profiles for settings you want to reuse across different recordings.
Choose your preferred settings, then enable the optional site-memory setting for the current website. Check which controls are included before saving.
To change a saved setup, adjust the controls and update the website’s saved settings. Remove the saved entry when you no longer want it applied.
After a refresh, a new tab or a browser restart, check the restored settings and audio status. Remembering preferences and starting an audio connection are separate actions, so you may still need to press Start listening.
Safe Site Memory avoids immediately applying a very high saved volume. It can begin at a conservative level, check the incoming signal and gradually increase the boost. Loud peaks can cause it to limit the increase.
This means the initial level may be lower than your saved setting. Let the restore process settle before adding more gain. This behaviour helps manage sudden changes, but it does not guarantee a comfortable level for every recording or playback device.
Save a profile after finding settings that suit a listening task. Give it a clear name, such as Quiet Lectures, Music or Movie Dialogue, so you can recognise it later.
Load the profile when you need it, then compare the result with the original recording. A profile that suits one source may need small adjustments for another.
Use the profile controls to save changes or remove entries you no longer need. Check the selected profile before updating or deleting it.

Export creates a settings file you can keep as a backup or transfer manually. Import loads supported settings from an exported file.
Check the import/export options to see whether the file includes profiles, website preferences or other controls. Export your current setup before importing if you want a backup.
Import and export are not cloud sync. They require you to save and load the file yourself.
These tools help you adjust playback, repeat a passage or manage longer listening sessions.

| Tool | How to Use It |
|---|---|
| Pitch control | Adjust pitch to suit the recording, then return it to the default value to remove the change |
| Playback speed | Slow down or speed up a supported player |
| A/B loop | Set the beginning and end of a passage to repeat it, then clear the loop to resume normal playback |
| Audio delay | Adjust audio timing while checking a visible event, such as a speaker’s lip movement |
| Sleep timer | Choose a listening duration, or cancel the timer to continue playback |
| Audio-tab switcher | Find tabs playing audio and switch to the one you want to control |
Playback speed and A/B loop are unavailable in Browser tab capture mode. They work with supported website players and files opened in the studio.
The sleep timer fades the audio before muting it. It does not shut down your computer. Audio delay also has limits, so return it to the default setting if an adjustment makes synchronisation worse.
Keyboard shortcuts give you another way to access supported controls. To check or change the commands available in your installed version:
If a shortcut does nothing, check whether another extension, Chrome or your operating system already uses it. Try a different combination with Chrome in focus.
Popup controls and browser shortcuts work differently. Controls inside the popup require it to be open. Commands listed on Chrome’s shortcuts page can trigger their assigned actions without the popup, subject to the command’s scope.
Use dark or light mode to suit your screen and surroundings. The compact popup provides quick listening controls, while the full audio studio gives you more space for detailed adjustments.
Volume Master – Sound Boost is available through the Chrome Web Store for desktop use. Compatibility depends on your browser, the website playing the audio and the processing mode you select. Some features may behave differently across browsers.
| Platform | Availability and Limits |
|---|---|
| Chrome desktop | The main installation route for this extension. Check the Chrome Web Store listing for browser requirements. |
| Windows | Controls audio in supported browser tabs. It does not boost sound across every Windows application. |
| macOS | Intended for use with desktop Chrome. Full compatibility with individual macOS devices has not been verified. |
| Linux / Chromebook | Check installation availability in Chrome. Full audio feature compatibility has not been verified on these platforms. |
| Microsoft Edge | Edge supports Chrome Web Store extensions, but the complete feature set of Volume Master has not been verified in Edge. |
| Brave | Volume Master compatibility with Brave has not been fully verified. Audio processing and capture behaviour may differ from Chrome. |
| Opera | Volume Master compatibility with Opera has not been verified across all audio features. |
| Opera GX | Full support for Volume Master in Opera GX has not been confirmed. Installation availability alone does not establish feature compatibility. |
| Firefox | A dedicated Volume Master – Sound Boost extension for Firefox is planned and is not currently available. |
| Android Chrome | The current desktop extension cannot be installed directly into Chrome on Android. |
| iPhone / iPad | A dedicated version of Volume Master – Sound Boost for iPhone or iPad is not currently available. |
A dedicated Edge release is different from installing the Chrome Web Store version in Edge. The absence of a separate Edge release does not, by itself, mean that installation is unavailable.
If a school or workplace manages your browser, its administrator may restrict extension installation or audio capture.
Firefox: Volume Master for Firefox: release status and setup guide
There is currently no Android APK or dedicated mobile app for Volume Master – Sound Boost. This product is a desktop browser extension, so its Chrome Web Store download is not an installer for Android, iPhone or iPad.
Volume Master includes fullscreen-friendly processing, but the result depends on the browser, website and active audio connection. Player fullscreen enlarges the video, while browser fullscreen changes the browser window itself.
Set your listening preferences before entering fullscreen. If you need to make changes, leave fullscreen temporarily, open the toolbar controls and return to the video.
If FULLSCREEN FALLBACK appears, check that audio remains active and review which controls are available through the fallback connection. Do not assume every playback tool remains available in every mode.
When fullscreen behaves unexpectedly:
Stop processing if it disrupts playback. Fullscreen support can vary, so a workaround that helps on one browser or website may not help on another.
Full guide: Volume Master full screen problem: checks and fixes
Start with the selected tab, playback state and audio connection. Change one thing at a time so you can identify what affects the problem.
| Symptom | First Check | Next Step |
|---|---|---|
| No volume difference | Confirm audio is playing in the intended tab | Press Start listening and open the “Why no difference?” helper |
| Audio stops after starting | Check extension, player and tab mute controls | Press Stop to restore normal playback, then try another available connection |
| NO AUDIO status | Check whether the recording is playing | Confirm the selected tab and restart the connection if needed |
| CAPTURE BLOCKED | Check the capture prompt and selected tab | Confirm permission. If the media restricts capture, use normal playback |

| Sudden loudness on return | Inspect restored volume and profile settings | Lower the saved level and review the restore behaviour |
| Fullscreen behaves differently | Check normal playback and audio status | Try another available connection and recheck fullscreen |
| Speed or A/B loop unavailable | Check the processing mode | Use a supported player or studio file. These tools are unavailable in Browser tab capture mode |
| Shortcut does nothing | Check chrome://extensions/shortcuts | Assign another combination and test with Chrome in focus |
| Sound plays on one side | Test another recording and check balance | Try mono or one-sided rescue for a recording issue. Check the output device if all audio is affected |
| Audio and video are out of sync | Return audio delay to its default setting | Compare normal playback, then make small timing adjustments if needed |
| Extension icon is missing | Open Chrome’s Extensions menu | Pin the extension and check that it is enabled |
| Problem began after an update | Note the browser and extension versions | Test another recording with other audio extensions temporarily disabled |
If the issue continues, record the website, browser version, extension version, connection mode and status message. Include the steps that trigger it when contacting support. This helps distinguish a website limitation from an extension or browser problem.
Full guide: Volume Master not working? Fix no sound or no volume boost
According to its Chrome Web Store listing, Volume Master – Sound Boost processes audio on your device. Profiles and preferences are saved in your browser. The listing states that no account is required and that the extension includes no audio-upload service or analytics.
Audio processing begins when you press Start listening and establish an audio connection. Press Stop to end processing and return to normal playback. Closing the popup alone does not stop an active session.
Read the permissions shown by Chrome during installation. If a tab-selection prompt appears, select only the tab you intend to process. You can review the extension’s available access controls under Chrome → Extensions → Manage extensions → Details.
A Chrome Web Store listing is not a blanket safety guarantee. Check the product identity, requested permissions and privacy information before installing. You can disable or remove the extension whenever you choose.

Full guide: Is Volume Master safe? Privacy and permissions explained
The extension combines quick volume adjustment with more detailed listening tools. Its usefulness depends on your recording, browser and preferred level of control.
| Pros | Cons and Limitations |
|---|---|
| 0–600% volume control with additional audio adjustments | More controls can take longer to learn than a basic slider |
| Eight listening presets for different content | No single preset suits every recording |
| Original vs Enhanced comparison | A louder result may still be less clear or comfortable |
| Saved profiles and optional website memory | Restored preferences may still require an active audio connection |
| Audio status and diagnostic helper | Website restrictions can still prevent processing |
| Compressor and peak limiter | These cannot repair distortion already present in a recording |
| Local audio processing and browser-stored preferences, as stated in the listing | Availability is currently focused on desktop browser use |
| Playback speed and A/B loop with supported players | These controls are unavailable in Browser tab capture mode |
High boost can introduce distortion. The limiter manages processed audio peaks, but it does not guarantee protection for your hearing, speakers or headphones.
Choose based on the audio you want to control and the tools you need.
| Your Need | Product Fit |
|---|---|
| Hear quiet lectures or dialogue more easily | Try Lecture mode and compare it with the original recording |
| Adjust individual browser tabs | Per-tab volume control is a core feature |
| Fine-tune sound and reuse settings | The EQ, profiles and optional website memory may help |
| Use only a simple volume slider | The basic controls may be enough; advanced tools are optional |
| Boost every Windows application | This browser extension does not provide system-wide control |
| Remove noise with AI or generate transcripts | These are planned features, not current tools |
| Install a mobile app | A dedicated Android, iPhone or iPad version is not currently offered |
Use the option that matches what you want to change. Resetting audio controls, stopping processing and removing saved preferences are separate actions.
Return the volume slider to 100% and the equalizer bands to 0 dB to remove those adjustments. Other enabled effects may still change the sound. Use Original for comparison or Stop to end processing.
Use the relevant settings controls to remove a saved website entry or profile. Do not assume that resetting the volume also deletes saved preferences. Check the scope of any reset option before confirming it, and export settings first if you want a backup.
You can turn it on again later without reinstalling.
Removing the extension ends its processing. If an already-open player remains silent or behaves unexpectedly, reload that page and check the player, tab and system volume controls.
The Chrome Web Store currently lists version 1.0.1, updated on October 11, 2026. Check the listing for the current release before installing.
The following features are planned and not currently available:
Roadmap items may change and do not have confirmed release dates.
Volume Master – Sound Boost gives you control over browser-tab audio with up to 600% volume adjustment, eight listening presets and a 10-band equalizer. Saved profiles and optional website memory help you reuse settings for lectures, music and movies.
Start with a modest boost and use Original vs Enhanced to check whether your changes improve clarity. Results depend on the recording, website and playback device. If you hear distortion, reduce the boost rather than pushing it higher.
